Eating healthy and nutritious food in portions matched to one’s level of physical activity is a key ingredient to a healthy weight and overall health. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, healthy eating includes an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat (or fat free) milk and milk products; includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts; is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars; and stays within your calorie needs (www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/healthy_eating/index.html).
In Marion, PHC – Marion and CHC Marion are working to change our environment, policies and systems so that everyone has access to healthy foods as part of your daily life. Over the past several years, we’ve worked with faith-based communities, schools and other organizations to add community gardens throughout Marion. We’re working with JMJ Discount Foods and More as our first Healthy in a Hurry Corner Store. We’ve supported our school districts as they’ve made policy and environmental changes to serve healthier foods at schools.
